I wrote this over a year ago while working on a cruise ship in Alaska. Sorry I never finished it. It was a great trip.
Day one in Juneau Alaska. It’s kind of rainy and over cast none the less beautiful. I saw some Eagles on the way to the hotel from the airport. The cabbie did not seem too impressed by them, just another trip from the airport. I walked around Juneau and took in many of the shops in search of a place to eat dinner. I settled on a place recommended to me from a friend called Tracey’s Crab Shack and had a delicious crab roll kind of like the lobster rolls I’ve grown used to in New England. It was devious and the view from my table on the dock was wonderful. I stopped at the world famous saloon on the way back to the hotel and resisted the temptation to buy T Shirt claiming Juneau is a drinking town with a fishing problem. Next stop short hiking trip to Mendenhall Glacier. First, you take a bus ride from downtown Juneau to the park about a 30-minute drive which passes by quickly with beautiful scenery. We spotted about 8 or ten bald eagles on a trip they are much more impressive live than on the back of currency. The park boasts some great views of the glacier as well as falls. I opted to walk to the falls which are about 1 mile each way on a fairly level trail. The falls were very powerful and offered great photo opportunities with both the falls and the glacier. I plan on calling my selfie of the glacier photo bombed by a glacier.
Day two
Ship arrives in Sasactjuan
The view is magnificent from the ship and along my walk into town.
I’m heartbroken to discover there is no wifi at Starbucks. It’s the only reason I got coffee here instead of with local place. This is something Anthony Bourdain never talks about. You’re always on the hunt for wifi. Ship wifi is crazy expensive. So before taking off on daily adventures, I like to check in with the rest of Tarafima.
This will be last time I go to this Starbucks.
This town really feels like an old western town.
I walk up and down the Main Street checking out the shops and restaurants finally breaking down and buying some caramel. I’ve been checking out the various tours and talk a guy into selling me a 21/2 hour bus tour up what he claims is the four most scenic road in America. I was going to take train ride which costs about $120. I thought I might save that for a time when I have someone up here to share the ride with me.
