Embedded Comedian January 17, 2007 From Boston comedian Jim McCue comes a true account of entertaining our troops overseas while keeping one’s sense of humor intact. To many, the idea of doing a tour of duty in Iraq is no laughing matter. Yet for Jim McCue along with fellow Boston comedian and friend Joey Carroll, that’s exactly what it is, as they perform stand up comedy to bring smiles and laughter to the troops’ otherwise very serious lives. This discerning memoir, taken from McCue’s own journal entries while stationed abroad, explores the fine line between laughter and sorrow as he experiences what it is like to live as a soldier in a war zone on a thirty day adventure leaving both Carroll and himself embedded in Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and finally Iraq. Whether they are being jostled from one form of transportation to another, staying in makeshift quarters, stranded on a military base, visiting a prison, or avoiding thoughts about landmines or bombs, both men remind themselves why they are there in the first place and the mission they’ve set out on – to provide a mental break for the men and women overseas risking their lives for their country. McCue’s reflections on each new experience, such as visiting the mess hall at Camp Diamondback where a bomb killed 22 people with 14 of them being U.S. soldiers, are sharp and accessible, and provide the opportunity to follow along with both comedians as they take off for duty without being given any itinerary for security purposes, being told as they go along what to eat, where to go and what to do. Humorous, insightful and at times poignant, Embedded Comedian is an honest portrayal of the US military through the eyes of a comedian. Embedded Comedian will be published on February 1st. Embedded Comedian Press release Since 1999 comedian Jim McCue has been answering the question what’s it like entertaining the troops? During a thirty day tour that took comedian Jim McCue on a world tour around the globe ending in Iraq Jim kept a journal to answer that very question. The book titled Embedded Comedian covers a sometimes funny sometimes poignant journey of a comedian embedded with our troops in places like a tunnel dug to keep the city of Sarajevo alive during the siege, getting stuck in Kyrgyzstan on route to Afghanistan, touring the death house then doing comedy at Abu Ghraib prison, entertaining the marines one month after the battle of Fallujah, having motors fired into the base in Ramadi or entertaining troops in Hospital in Anaconda. Jim McCue got the rare opportunity to eat sleep and joke around with our nations men and women in uniform and writes this straight forward book about his experience and adventures entertaining the US military. |
