McCue's Comedy Club Celebrates 5 Years of Laughs

During COVID, comedian Jim McCue was having a cheeseburger at the world-famous Roundabout Diner when he noticed something unusual. The diner was feeding people and had even hired a musician to entertain guests under a tent in the parking lot.

Jim asked, "Have you ever considered doing comedy in the tent?"

At the time, comedians were performing at drive-in movie theaters, so it didn't seem like the craziest idea in the world.

The answer was no.

However, the diner owner had another idea.

"You can't do comedy in the tent, but you can perform in the function room. The only catch is that because of social distancing, we can't have more than 42 people inside."

Jim replied, "First of all, I doubt we'll get more than eight people.

And so it began.

Sometimes there were a dozen audience members. Sometimes there were all 42. Comedy fans traveled from New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts just for the chance to laugh together during a strange and uncertain time.

The comedians loved the intimate room, the great diner food, and the opportunity to swap road stories while wondering if this was the end of comedy civilization as we knew it.

A year later, the shows were still going strong. Jim approached his sister Helen DiMarzio, Director of the Boston Comedy Festival, about turning the series into a permanent comedy club.

They tossed around dozens of possible names.

Finally, Helen said, "Why don't we just call it McCue's Comedy Club?"

Five years later, that's exactly what it is.

On Friday, June 20, McCue's Comedy Club will celebrate 5 years of great comedians, great audiences, and great diner food—a combination that has proven to be a match made in comedy heaven.

Jim McCue will headline the anniversary show, joined by special guest comedians from the club's history who will stop by to share stories and laughs.

There may even be a birthday cake.

We hope you'll join us for the celebration.
